COMBAT JU-JUTSU DISCIPLINES
4 FormatsAuthoritative breakdown of the four international competition formats governed under CJJIF standards.
Close Combat
Dynamic blend of striking, throwing, and ground submissions
Close Combat is the hallmark competitive discipline of Combat Ju-Jutsu. It allows controlled striking techniques on the feet and standing clinch, dynamic throws (takedowns), transition to the ground, and controlled submissions (joint locks and chokes) under strict international safety rules.
Rules & Permitted Techniques
Athletes compete in rounds on standard tatami mats. Striking is restricted to permissible zones; illegal strikes (such as strikes to the spine, back of head, or groins) result in immediate penalization.
Scoring Criteria & Victory Conditions
Points awarded for clean strikes, high-amplitude throws, dominant positional control, and reversals. Submissions or technical knockouts achieve an immediate victory (Ippon).
Mandatory Protective Equipment:
Ground Fight (Ne-Waza)
Technical positional dominance and joint submissions on the tatami
Focusing exclusively on tactical grappling, positional escapes, sweeps, transitions, and joint manipulation/chokes once the athletes are grounded. Striking is not permitted in Ground Fight, highlighting technical leverage and biomechanics.
Rules & Permitted Techniques
Bouts start standing or immediately in contact. Points are granted for successful takedowns, guard passes, knee-on-belly, mounts, back takes, and submission attempts.
Scoring Criteria & Victory Conditions
Standard international grappling point system with clear time limits. Tap out, verbal concession, or referee stoppage ends the match immediately.
Mandatory Protective Equipment:
Full Contact
High-intensity athletic competition under full unified rules
Sanctioned for experienced adult athletes and elite competitors, Full Contact incorporates full continuous striking combinations, clinch work, throws, and regulated ground fighting subject to referee command.
Rules & Permitted Techniques
Governed by senior international referees. Medical checks and certified ringside physician presence are mandatory.
Scoring Criteria & Victory Conditions
Judged on effective striking impact, takedown precision, octagon/mat control, and submission aggression.
Mandatory Protective Equipment:
Self-Defense Demonstration
Technical demonstration of practical real-world defensive scenarios
Pairs of athletes demonstrate structured defensive combinations against unarmed and simulated armed attacks, judged on realism, biomechanical efficacy, speed, control, and disarming techniques.
Rules & Permitted Techniques
Evaluated by an international panel of judges according to official CJJIF assessment rubrics.
Scoring Criteria & Victory Conditions
Scored out of 10 for technical accuracy, realistic response timing, stance balance, and fluid neutralization.
Mandatory Protective Equipment:
Official Rules & Scoring Manual
Review detailed point values, time limits, weight categories, and penalties.
